The diary changes in September. Calls become meetings, there is usually a wedding at the end of the month, and one morning it is simply too cold for what you wore last week. None of that requires new shoes exactly. It does tend to expose the ones you have been getting away with.

A six eyelet capped Oxford in hand-finished calf, black or tan. The plainest formal shoe we do and the one that travels furthest: a Tuesday meeting, a Friday dinner, a wedding at the end of the month, without once looking like it is trying. Leather lined, cushioned footbed, rubber sole. £160.

The Monkton Double Monk
For when plain feels like a missed opportunity.
A plain double monk with gun-metal buckles, in brown or black. It carries rather more personality than an Oxford without ever raising its voice, and on a morning that has got away from you it is a good deal quicker to put on. Fully leather lined, leather insole, rubber sole. £139.
