The holiday season, particularly around Christmas, is often associated with indulgent eating and reduced physical activity, leading to weight gain for many people. Studies consistently show that the period between late November and early January is a high-risk time for weight gain.
A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that, on average, people in the United States gain about 0.4 to 0.9 kilograms (1 to 2 pounds) during the holiday season. Similar trends are observed in other countries, with participants in European countries such as Germany and Finland experiencing average gains of 0.5 to 1 kilogram (1.1 to 2.2 pounds). While this might seem modest, the concern lies
in the fact that much of this weight is not typically lost post-holiday, contributing to gradual long-term weight gain.
Another study from The New York Times revealed that about 10% of the population gains 5 pounds (2.3 kilograms) or more over the holidays.
Research indicates that people often underestimate the caloric content of holiday foods and overestimate their activity levels.
