Hi there -
New Roaster Alert: Welcome Little Waves! From a coffee bike in 2004 to Micro-Roaster of the Year in 2022, Little Waves may be new to Bean Box-but they've been making a real splash for years. Today, I'm drinking their Los Toros, a directly-sourced, partnership coffee from Mexico that tastes like freshly-baked cinnamon babka and creamy chocolate fudge.
Tastes Like: Cinnamon, Sweet Tea, Chocolate Fudge
Why I'm obsessed: YES! I'm so happy to announce that Little Waves, an award-winning coffee company based in Durham, NC, is joining us here at Bean Box. I first tasted Little Waves during their Seattle residency with La Marzocco back in 2019, and I've been dreaming of the day we'd bring them into the fold. That day is here! Little Waves is a proudly Latina-owned, women-forward roaster built on a foundation of connection: to community, to craft, and to each other. Co-founders Areli and Leon fell in love while building their business, and that sense of joy, purpose, and deep-rooted care shows up in everything they do-from their inclusive hiring practices to their long-term sourcing relationships with producers around the world.
Areli was born in Mexico, so it feels especially fitting to introduce Little Waves with a direct-relationship Mexican coffee. Los Toros comes from the Bella Vista community in Chiapas, where Little Waves has been working directly with Rosalba Cifuentes and a group of dedicated producers for five years. And wow, the flavor. Los Toros reminds me of a blend of chocolate and cinnamon babka or café de olla, the traditional Mexican coffee drink steeped with cinnamon and sugar. It's sweet, warm, and comforting. The aroma is all cinnamon-sugar swirl, the body is smooth like sweet tea, and the finish melts into a velvety chocolate fudge with that sprinkle of cinnamon that lingers on your tongue. I am loving this one as drip or cold brew, but with its intense chocolate and spicy notes, this one would also be a great espresso or french-press coffee. Little Waves is going to be a new staple at my home coffee bar, and I know they'll be a hit at yours as well!
Bottom Line: You'll love Little Waves Los Toros Mexican blend if you love cinnamon babka, chocolate milk, or creamy cold-brew coffees.
