We messed up.
When we launched the Owl + Lark mattress in 2020 it came with beautiful leather handles.
They looked incredible. Soft to the touch, easy on the eye. A real statement.
If you used them to rotate the mattress, they held up perfectly.
If you tried to lift the full weight of the mattress on just one or two of them, they were not really up to the task.
Some of them tore.
Not the end of the world. It does not stop you sleeping. But still, not good enough.
So we went back to the drawing board.
We wanted stronger handles, but we refused to ruin the look. The elegance had to stay.
After a few months of testing we found the answer.
Inside each handle there is now a layer of woven nylon.
The same grade used in car seat belts.
On the outside the handle looks exactly the same as before. On the inside it is a different creature entirely.
The result is almost ridiculous. We cannot break them even when we try.
Full body weight. Hard pulls. Repeated stress. The handles just do not give in.
We found that where it attaches to the mattress will give up before the handle does (we've tested this so you don't have to - please don't try).
It's a small detail, but a meaningful one.
This has become a pattern in how we build things.
Every tiny detail gets questioned. Pulled apart. Improved. Then questioned again.
Handles were the obvious one. But some of the things we obsess over are so subtle that most people will never notice them at all.
A good example is the rotation tags.
Small leather tabs on each side of the mattress that look like they serve no purpose.
But flip them over and you will find the seasons printed inside. Two on each tag.
They tell you exactly which way the mattress should be facing and when it is time to rotate.
No more guessing. No more pulling out your phone to search for an old reminder. Just a quiet guide built into the product itself.
