Connected by the Outdoors
In 2022, a catastrophic wildfire devastated northern California's Lost Sierra region and its already struggling communities. The Dixie Fire also torched most of a massive new trail network intended to bring new life to the area's economy. But in the face of disaster came an opportunity for Sierra Buttes Trails Stewardship-bringing forward new ideas for fire management, economic recovery, and a closer connection to the places they call home.

In other stories, athletes, scientists, creatives, and outdoor lovers unite in Italy to advocate for the places they love; the first-place essay from our youth writing competition questions the theft of hope; and we take you behind the scenes at Patagonia HQ in California.

Fire Lines
In northern California, climate change and 150 years of forest mismanagement have led to some of the most catastrophic wildfires in the state's history-including the Dixie Fire, which in 2022 devastated the Lost Sierra's already struggling communities. In the face of that destruction, one group turned to trails for hope and to the past for a better future.
