Our partnership with D.S. & Durga on the
Debaser Buffing Bar allotted us some quality time with David (D.S.) and Kavi (Durga), the talented husband-wife duo who built the American perfume house from scratch. We've always admired D.S. & Durga from afar and our partnership developed naturally-Kavi and our founder, Rebecca, first got chatting because of an operations question (about aluminum bottles!). And now, here we are. Like friends of friends at a house party, you all should meet!

How did D.S. & Durga begin?
David Seth Moltz:
In the early aughts I was very interested in the plants growing around me in Brooklyn. Kavi & I met in 2007. On weekends we would peruse old bookstores and I was intrigued by the old-fashioned herbals & botany books. In the back, there were strange recipes. I started to dabble. In Dec 2007, we decided to make some tonics and colognes for friends. They liked. Kavi said we should bottle them and start a company.

What sets D.S. & Durga apart from other fragrance houses?
DSM:
We're perfumer-designer owned. What you sniff, we made. We didn't bring our ideas to a perfumer or a brand person and have them make our products. I write all the words you read & Kavi does the designs. It's our little art project.

What do you hope D.S. & Durga represents for your customers?
Kavi Durga:
This is a great question! I hope that we can provide a beautiful experience for your eyes and nose. I hope people will smile and find that perfume can be fun. That our product can be serious and fancy yet our messaging can be playful and weird.

Where do you gather inspiration from?
KD:
I'm really drawn to patterns and shapes and prints. The sunrise and sunset light and sky can make me really emotional and feel like I have so much to share.
David, we hear 'soap bars' are your favorite beauty product. Tell us more.
DSM:
Besides pomade, bar soap is the only beauty product I use. I love fancy fumed bars of soap for maximum showering joy.

How strong is Debaser Buffing Bar?
DSM:
Debaser will envelop you in a round, radiant fig while in the shower and a bit after, but in a serviceably soft way. It shouldn't stay so long as to disrupt your official fume game. So if I had to get technical, I'd say the strength is "perfect," or "wicked good, guy."

Tell us more about the sliced eyeball.
DSM:
The song Debaser was a life changer for yon Moltz. It introduced me to a world of strange cinema like the Buñeal film where they slice an eyeball to "attack the viewer" (can you tell I went to film school). Debaser the perfume is a memory of long hot August nights in 7th grade hanging with cool older kids listening to the Pixies and other provocative music.
