Learn the art of ironing from menswear stylist Benedict Browne and keep your shirts crisp by following this step-by-step guide.
STEP 1: SPRAY
To add crispness, spritz your shirt with fabric finishing spray from six inches away.
STEP 2: COLLAR
Working tip to middle in one direction, iron the inside of the collar flat. Leave upturned until finished.
STEP 3: CUFFS
Iron the inside of the cuff from the bottom edge toward the sleeve, using the iron tip to get the pleats above the cuff.
STEP 4: SLEEVES
Pull the sleeve taut, forming a straight fold from shoulder to cuff, ensuring both layers are smooth. Iron in sweeping motions, then rotate and repeat.
STEP 5: SHOULDERS
Slide the armpit part of the sleeve over the end of the ironing board and iron the shoulders smooth.
STEP 6: YOKE
Swinging the iron from shoulder to mid-back, iron the two strips that connect the collar to the shirt. Continue down the back of the shirt.
STEP 7: FACE THE FRONT
Iron each half in long strokes from the collar down, starting with the placket. (Iron from the bottom up if you have a pocket.) Finish by ironing around the buttons. Voilà, you're wrinkle-free and ready to go.
