The scanner works by lowering a person into a shallow water pool ringed with half a million ultrasonic sensors the size of sand grains, which fire soundwaves through the body from every angle to build a 3D image comparable to MRI but roughly 100 times faster. Midjourney built the scanner in partnership with Butterfly Network, an ultrasound chip manufacturer, under an exclusive licensing deal signed in November 2025 - the hardware effort is led by a former Apple Vision Pro engineer. The company's stated ambition is 50,000 scanners operating worldwide by 2031, with capacity for more annual scans than all MRI machines on Earth combined - leadership says that level of early imaging could "avoid 30 percent of all deaths." |
